Aquaman, the deposed king meets Krush the Atlantean who is more crustacean than man. He wants to hold Aquaman captive so that he can be used as a security measure against the new king of Atlantis, Rath. Will Aquaman yield to Krush and confirm his identity to save Dolphin, the mysterious mute girl?

I am impressed with Abnett’s Aquaman. He has taken ideas from Peter David and Kurk Busiek and made them fresh and better in his own version of Aquaman without negating continuity while creating new chapters and new original sagas for the character. This Aquaman has nothing to do with the joke of Saturday morning cartoons.

I like that many characters are playing parts and that Mera is still a part of this story even as she cannot reach Atlantis. Even Tempest has been brought back to the fold and new mysteries have been hinted at in this series and the Titans. I encourage you to read Abnett’s Aquaman. His contribution to the character will soon reach and perhaps surpass that of Geoff Johns and Peter David.

Of course, this series would not be as great if it were not for Stjepan Sejic artwork which reinforces Abnett’s world-building. Sejic’s work has class but also action. It is marvelous and a curiosity how he achieves such effects with an almost painterly style. Painted comics are not known as being the most dynamic. Sejic’s Aquaman is dynamic.
