This issue bridges Aquaman’s world with some of his past adventures before Rebirth. The Aquamarines seek Aquaman’s help to investigate the origins of Deadwater the monstrous creature that killed several people in the past and that was stopped by Aquaman. But the creature who was thought to be dead reappears and is killing again. Can Aquaman and Mera stop Deadwater?

This issue is and the next are bridge issues before the net major Aquaman storyline. It brings back the Aquamarines and wraps up an old story. Since Rebirth, I have not been sure about how much of the old stories were true or not. I am glad to see that some of Aquaman’s 52 adventures have been preserved. The story is a classic mystery with members of the cast being taken down until Aquaman intervenes. It just works.

What works less for me is Philippe Briones’s art. He resembles John Byrne but not in a pleasant way. His figures are stiff and the faces not attractive. His work would look better with a dedicated inker. He should not ink his own work. His Deadwater looks scary though.
