The school is divided over the fate of young Kevin Ford, the mutant whose very touch can kill. Will the Xavier Institute allow him to be turned over to the authorities? And it only takes a testy situation like this to set fire to the feud between the New Mutants and the Hellions!
This is a strange story, one month things seem fresh and interesting and the next they can be stagnant and lethargic. The arc as well really could have been shorter, which could have worked better to hook new readers. Unfortunately, the story seems to of taken a rather predictable, transparent turn. You know exactly what's going to happen in this issue at every turn and the dialogue seems flat and in places clunky. Hopefully issue #6 will be surprising and can lift this story back up to where it should be.
Mark Ryan is a talented cat and a great addition to the creative team of this book. You can see this when you turn the pages. I'm glad he's toned down the kids a little. I mean, they're kids, so they're not all going to be tonk. The one BIG problem though, for this book, is the fact that they can't hold down an artist. So once you get used to things looking one way, all change.
