I remember when volume one dropped and every single issue was fire, even if you had to wait months for it. Now though, that fire seems to have become just a flicker. Millar puts a few interesting threads in the story, but other than that, it’s kinda flat. You can see some nods to Marvel Universe Proper, but you have to wonder what’s the point and do we want an identical twin. Things could get interesting with the whole mole and the speculation to who they are (the skin looks dark, which would say Fury. But that’s a little too simple), but I don’t know.
Hitch’s work is kinda up and down this issue. The first splash page is nice and is the way of this issue. The darker, grittier scenes look good and are the only ones that seem to have feeling. The other stuff jus doesn’t connect in the same way. It’s not terrible (saying that, the first close up of Jan is mad off key), it’s just a little flat. The new character designs (The Defenders) are weak and as they’re in a lot of the issue, it really doesn’t help the overall feel.
