Superman/Batman # 27
DC COMICS
WRITER: Mark Verheiden
ARTIST: Kevin Maguire
COVER: Ethan Van Sciver
A very strange issue which opens with Superman and Batman fighting alongside Power Girl and Huntress in a zoo. But slowly, it becomes clear that these are not the heroes we are familiar with. What we have here is a tale set on Earth-2, when Helena Wayne was still alive and part of continuity. What is even odder is that the minds of Superman and Batman are soon trapped in the bodies of Power Girl and Huntress, leading to some very interesting scenes. There are also numerous Earth-2 supervillains and some really good dialogue, both moving and clever, to spice things up. Maguire's art is top-quality as usual, especially his facial expressions. In fact, Maguire seems so proud of his facial expressions that he uses close-ups in panels where wide shots might be more suitable. What really makes this story strange is that there is no explanation, no mention of Earth-2 or why Batman should feel any attachment to the Huntress. Old fogies will understand everything instantly but many newcomers will be left puzzled, maybe even irritated.
