X-MEN #158 "DAY OF THE ATOM" pt. 2 (of 4)

Last issue's surprise ending should have X-fans talking for months! Will the return of this character prove to be the saving grace of the X-Men, or will it doom them forever? Plus: a surprise twist in the life of Gambit!

This is shaping up to be a potentially really interesting story. There are so many different facets that contain their own interesting angles, which add to the fascination of the overall story. Josh is still trying to find himself at Xavier's with the help of Sammy, but something or someone is lurking. Now the biggest thing cats want to know is the Xorn quandary. It looks like the ramifications of this could ripe apart the very fabric the X-Men know! Austin brings all these threads together pretty well and throws in some good twists. Some dialogue is shaky, but all in all, definitely an enjoyable issue.

Larroca's art is again gorgeous. His backgrounds and landscapes are stunning. This is really brought home in the first few panels. The rendition of the twisted devastation around Xorn truly reflects the horror of the situation. We get some nice power usage scenes, especially from Bobby. The fights were good, but the Chinese Immortals did seem a little stiff and wooden at times. The cover is nice too, but for some reason Rogues seems to look out of proportion.

Report Card - C+
