The final issue of this tale about a mystical war between the various houses of the Zodiac is a sad anticlimax for a series that was never too exciting to begin with. Perhaps it was because the creators were forced to create an abrupt wrap-up to a series that they planned to run for several years. This issue was suppose to be the start of a new storyline but it turns out to the end of the story instead. But this title has always been a difficult read. The story isn't just inaccessible to newcomers-- it's impenetrable. And the characters aren't simply hard to like. They are difficult to comprehend or understand. In this last issue, a number of key characters are killed off but it is hard to care. Perhaps DC thought the lush artwork of Doran would bring in the readers but all her gorgeous detail just makes this comic look even more crowded than it should be. It is always sad to see a bold experiment in comics fail. But unlike other underperforming DC titles, I don't think I'll miss REIGN OF THE ZODIAC at all.
