Rated “T” for “Teen”
The Earth is under constant threat from “Neighbors,” powerful humanoids and invincible monsters from another dimension. There was a day when a gate opened in Mikado City, and Neighbors emerged, destroying much of the city and killing hundreds of citizens. However, an elite band of warriors, the Border Defense Agency or “Border,” co-opted Neighbor technology and now fights back against their incursions. Osamu Mikumo, a 15-year-old high school student, is a Border trainee, and his friend, Yuma Kuga, is a Neighbor that looks like a human.
As World Trigger, Vol. 8 (Engage Thy Neighbor, Chapter 62 to 70) opens, the current invasion of Neighbors is in full force. Humanoid Neighbors from the Neighbor country of Aftokrator lead the attack. They are after the C-rank Border agents, but they want one in particular, Chika Amatori. Osamu is determined to protect his friend.
THE LOWDOWN: The World Trigger manga is proving to be one of the more inventive new battle manga. Sometimes, however, creator Daisuke Ashihara simply focuses on the battle at hand.
World Trigger Volume 8 is mostly about battle, as was the case with Vol. 7. While that previous volume introduced new characters and elements to the series, this current volume simply puts the new stuff to the work of fighting. As usual, World Trigger has a unique battle manga style, and the defense of Chika proves to be a thrilling read. There are secrets still to come and some new stuff, obviously. In the meantime, enjoy the fight.
POSSIBLE AUDIENCE: Readers looking for a good alien invasion graphic novel series for young readers and youthful older readers will want to pull the World Trigger.
