The police arrive at the home of Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) and her family to deliver the shocking news that Audrey’s warm and loving husband, Brian (David Duchovny) has been killed in a random act of violence.  The sudden death of her husband shatters Audrey’s life and leaves her adrift.  In her grief, she turns to one of her husband’s life-long friends, Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro), a former lawyer and drug addict who is on a serious downward spiral.

Audrey is desperate to fill the void caused by Brian’s death, so she invites Jerry to move into the room adjacent to their garage in the hope that his presence can help her and her two children, Harper (Alexis Llewellyn) and Dory (Micah Berry,) cope with their sudden loss.  Jerry, however, faces a daily battle to stay off drugs, but acting as a surrogate parent to Harper and Dory helps him.  Together, Audrey and Jerry work to repair their lives.
