The Sentry fights Ares the son of Zeus and the God of war, as the latter rebels against Norman Osborne when he learns of the treachery of the Dark Avengers’ leader. But the fight is vicious and only one of the combatants will emerge victorious. Elsewhere, Captain America’s Avengers are preparing to join the onslaught on the side of the Asgardians. Will that be enough to stop Osborn, H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Sentry.
The Sentry has been catapulted as a major force the last few months in the pages of the Dark Avengers and as usual, such a terrible power must become a threat that everyone must rally to fight. It’s a formula that I’ve seen too often in comic books and it’s unoriginal here. By now I’ll spare the reader with the spoiler of this issue and who apparently dies. I didn’t know Greek Gods could die too. There are rules about epics like this one and it’s that someone must die in the early stages of the story to show the scope of the adventure. So far, there isn’t much scope in this story and just preparation for war from the heroes’ side. But that’s the way Bendis writes and he would be cheating the reader if he actually showed a lot of action and little useless dialogues before the third issue.
Coipel is in a class of his own artistically and although his work is not conventional, it is original and powerful. He tends to make all men with large frames and small chins and this does take away overall from his work. Yet besides this weakness, he is a great storyteller and someone who knows how to draw action on a page.
