Dead@17 Revolution #2

Howard continues the saga of Nara, the resurrected girl whose mission, handed to her by the forces of heaven, is to stop Bolabogg, a demon from Hell. Captive of Heaven’s Militia, Nara and her mentor Noel Raddemer, Joan, the extremists’ leader’s tries to enlist the heroine to her cause. Meanwhile, Nara’s friends Elijah and Hazy discuss the birth of their baby. Elsewhere, Bolabogg returns to life.

Much of this issue deals with past secrets and the relationship between Raddemer, Joan and Nara. There isn’t any action, just talking heads. Like past issues, this episode seems stretched so that it can be fitted into a trade paperback. Fortunately Howard provides ample motivations for all the major actors of this story before their confrontation explodes in the next issues. Thus, thee plot is structured.

As for the artwork, talking heads will always be talking heads. Howard uses more silent panels than in the past, which improves his storytelling. Many sequences are more cinematic than before. For example, a thunderstorm and rain frame the sequence where Bolagogg gets out of his hospital bed. Howard frames the sequence where Joan confronts Noel with a full moon backdrop. It’s quite effective.
