A new menace based on chaos magic is back and it is taking all the Avengers out. Hercules’ sidekick, Amadeus, the seventh most intelligent man on Earth determines that the only thing that can stop this new menace is a new team of Avengers, lead by Hank Pym, who now calls himself the Wasp. Will Pym and the other Avengers be capable of stopping Chthon, the former Avenger known as Quicksilver?

I’ve enjoyed Slott’s work in the Avengers Initiative series, so I’m not surprised that he would make an interesting story based on a traditional plot device used to create new super teams time and time over. A new threat shows up, a new team is recruited to deal with it. What interests me the most is that this series has found a new voice, now that the Civil War influenced Avengers’ era is over. This series offers a mix of old and new characters, which should be interesting. It also serves to redeem Hank Pym once and for all and prove that he’s not just a neurotic super hero. Mostly, I felt like I was reading a John Byrne adventure with the cliffhanging reveal of the new major villain at the end. I’m hooked.

Pham is weird artist. His work reminds me of several artists at once. However, those artists have nothing in common. He draws from Coipel, Maguire, Jim Lee and Jeff Johnson. He draws the best from each of these artists, however, inkers Martinez and Miki are not the best suited for his work. They put too much grit and lines instead of a clear fluid inked line which would reinforce the strong composition and character designs of Pham.
