MAN IS VOX: BARRACUDAE is a trippy reading experience through the minds of peculiar people with peculiar powers. The story of a psycho looking for a psycho, it shifts styles and substance with the suddenness of a hyperactive child or moody, depression-driven adult.

Part of it reminds me of one of those movies about crazy backwoods people. Another part is as loopy as those zany cartoons from MTV's late, lamented, "Liquid Television." The book's major problem is that the storytelling is too oblique and too insular. Reading it gave me the feeling that a lot of important stuff was still trapped in Thomas and Allen's imaginations. One good head-knocking accident and all the brilliant contents would have come out.

Still, it's inspired work, and it's good to see new talent stretching the boundaries of storytelling. Maybe next time, they'll share more of their surrealism with everybody, but in the meantime, you can visit them at www.candlelightpress.com.
