This TPB compiles a miniseries about a group of American soldiers in World War II who find themselves caught in the middle of a war between the forces of God and the ranks of the fallen angels-- many of whom are posing as Nazis. Oddly, the compilation of all four chapters into one book actually works in this case as the miniseries did not rely too much on cliffhangers. The story has a good mix of action and introspection with flashbacks that don't feel forced and dialogue that sounds both realistic and entertaining. While it hardly follows scripture, it doesn't sneer at religion either. What stands out is how un-cynical the story is. Comic-book stories about war and religion nowadays tend to emphasize weariness, emptiness and desperation. This story has people being machine-gunned to pieces like characters in a zombie movie but the over-the-top violence in this book is almost uplifting as each of the American soldiers, in his own way, gives his all for a good cause. The art is a good mix of various styles from EC comics, DC's own war titles and even a little of Bill Maudlin. The fact that this book isn't tied to the DC universe but isn't trying for Vertigo-level weirdness, also makes it shine.
