Karl Kerschl was interviewed at the Montreal Comic Book Expo.

Hervé

CBB: Are you Canadian?

Yes, I was born in Toronto. I grew up in Niagara Falls.

CBB: Do you know Leonard Kirk? He's your neighbour.

I don't know Kirk too well.

CBB: What are you working on right now?

I'm doing a three issue crossover on Superman, Action Comics and Adventures of Superman written by Dan Abnett and Andy Manning. It's a story about Superman missing, but it was spoiled by the preview covers. I also worked on a X2 Prequel.

CBB: What company do you work the most for these days?

DC. I did lots of stuff for Marvel. I love Superman. He's fun to draw.

CBB: Your work looks like Alan Davis.

Thanks for the compliment.

CBB: Yeah, but it's more angular.

I used to be more angular, but my I softened recently.

CBB: What's your history in this industry?

I started when I was 18. I did some stuff for a small company called Now. I did covers for the Green Hornet comic book. Then I worked on some small stuff for Marvel. I did a Daily Bugle miniseries. I did some Ghost Riders. Since then, I've been working on and off like the Iceman miniseries. I did some fill in for Dead Pool, lots of magazine and role playing illustrations.

CBB: Have you worked on a regular series?

No I avoided them. I'm not sure I was comfortable working on a monthly. Now, I'm feeling better about that. It's easier to do a monthly now. The writers and publishers have three issues story arcs and one fill in. Many artists appreciate that. It's hard to work on twelve issues a year.

CBB: What are your artistic influences?

Miyazaki. I'm a huge fan of Mike Mignola. My stuff was extremely reminiscent of him before, but now, I've got my own way. My influences change all the time. I like the work of the Capcom design team.

CBB: So you like Japanese artists?

I don't read much Japanese comics or movies. I like Tetsuya Nemura, designer of Final Fantasy.

CBB: What other books are your working after?

I have no idea. I'd like to draw Superman. Majestic is not like Superman.

CBB: So who's your favourite character to work on?

Superman.

CBB: Do you have any personal projects right now?

I've got stuff on the back burner. I haven't had time to work on any of my stuff. Find out more about Karl Kerschl.
