Two high school students are both from eminent families and are of good character. Kaguya Shinomiya, a well-bred lady and an heir, is Student Council Vice-President at Shuchin Academy, a school for the children of the rich and famous and for future leaders. Miyuki Shirogane is the strong, silent type who has a singular focus on his studies, and he is President of the Student Council. Kaguya and Miyuki are two geniuses, each in love with the other. But love is war, so which one will confess love to the other when the one who confesses his... or her love loses first.
As Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Vol. 5 (Chapters 41 to 50) opens, Kaguya and Shirogane are well into their summer vacation, and neither one of them has done a thing to really enjoy that time. Friends invite Kaguya to attend a fireworks festival, but her strict family forbids it. Now, it is up to her friends... and Shirogane to save the day for her! Plus, Chika Fujiwara, who is often caught between Kaguya and Shirogane, visits a ramen shop and later, tries to help Shirogane learn to gut a fish!
THE LOWDOWN: The Kaguya-sama: Love is War manga is an episodic manga that is, in tone and tradition, like Hayate the Combat Butler. Each chapter is essentially an episode and focuses on a new situation. Kaguya-sama's situations are comedic, so it would be fair and accurate to call it a situation comedy or sitcom.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War Graphic Novel Volume 5 sees the series really hit its stride. I thought Vol. 4 was a little inconsistent, but almost every chapter in Vol. 5 is a delight. I would describe some of Vol. 5's chapters slash episodes as comedy gold, especially “The Student Council Has Not Achieved Nirvana.” This gem finds Kaguya, Shirogane, and the top supporting players trying to find out if two fellow classmates, who are also a couple, have engaged in sexual intercourse. I am ready to really love Kaguya-sama, and I think that I feel stronger about recommending it to fans of shonen comedies.
