In a future beset by infertility, the government enforces mandatory sex indoctrination in early childhood, and sex becomes boring to young people. A woman who was a compulsive biter as a child finds that her psychological condition revisits her when she becomes a mother. An automaton masters her owner's nonchalant attitude even in the face of murder. Clones struggle to earn the points that will keep them from being consumed for spare body parts.
In her new Manga volume, IC in a Sunflower, Mitsukazu Mihara takes Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone" to the borderlands of damnation in this collection of seven darkling tales. Some of them are nasty little fairy tales (like "Fish out of Water") and some are bleak glimpses into the future (such as "Alive"). The reader can call them cautionary tales, but Mihara smacks you in the face and then yells "caution." This is easily some of her best work made available in English.
