Faced with an array of villains from his past confronting him, Hawkman has to face the fury of the Manhawks and hopefully survive. While fighting Manhawks is a challenge, facing continued attacks from his other enemies makes the situation dangerous for the Winged Wonder. Even with Golden Eagle by his side, can Hawkman even hope to survive this issue. It doesn’t look good at all for him.
This issue was good for only one reason. It showed Hawkman fighting the hell out of his enemies in a last attempt to survive. This is an adrenaline rush type story, so we can forgive all misgivings about past issues. Well, not all of them. An issue that remains to be explained is how Hawkman’s arch gallery, which features villains from the Golden Age can remain so youthful. Do they also reincarnate?
The artwork is intense and cool. There is so much gore that one could mistake this book for Conan or Wolverine. Bennett is a great action storyteller. The success of this issue rests on his work and not the authors. It was almost cinematic. The first few pages introduce each of Hawkman’s enemies one after the other while the Manhawks fly above. The sense of dread this creates is wonderful. Great stuff.
