The fall of New Genesis and the death of virtually all the New Gods at the hands of Darkseid's hordes are the subjects of this Elseworlds tale, giving a look into the possible futures of Superman and Batman.

The World's Finest team are virtually supporting characters in this story of evil triumphing over good. In both words and pictures, Byrne captures the grit and the drama of war. His new, darker, heavier art style is actually more suited to this sad story. However, while he gets the action right, Byrne fails to convey the sense of high tragedy over the destruction of New Genesis and the deaths of several key characters.

But Byrne does give us a convincingly heroic Superman who makes it clear that Darkseid will pay for his crimes. Even that rather wooden monologue by Superman at the end works in its own way. Byrne is also the only writer/artist, aside from Kirby, who makes it clear that Darkseid is enjoying the naughty things he does. Hopefully, Darkseid's comeuppance in the coming issues will have the epic dimensions that Byrne failed to attain in this issue.
