Galaxy Man is the story of astronomer Stanley Quest, who's astronaut wife Amelia becomes lost in space. On that same fateful night, he is endowed with incredible powers when a meteor strikes his observatory. He uses his new-found abilities to search the solar system for his lost wife while also protecting Stellar City. Sometimes, he is assisted by his young side kick Cosmic Girl, whom he doesn’t realize is really his daughter, Suzie. “The first issue just sold through, and #2 is low on stock, so Diamond has asked for more,” said Puttkammer. “Initially, they were leery about a new title from small press,” said Puttkammer, the owner of Galactic Quest Comics in Lawrenceville, GA., and a second store in nearby Buford. “But four issues later, they’ve seen the value the book brings to libraries and schools.”
The fourth issue, which he said will feature a “retro-future feel,” was inspired by the astronauts of the Apollo era, which includes Neil Armstrong, who passed away as the issue was going to press. “We haven’t really heard much about America’s space program lately,” said Puttkammer, “other than the Mars Lander. I really think we should get back to the moon with some high-definition cameras and inspire the next generation.” Puttkammer regards the astronauts as great American heroes at a special time in history. “Unlike a lot sports heroes and other celebrities today, they didn’t milk the publicity,” he said. The fourth issue of Galaxy Man will also feature a preview of Hero Cats, a new feature starring Cosmic Girl’s cats as super-heroes. “It will be drawn more realistically to appeal to adults,” said Puttkammer. Hero Cats debuted at Heroes-Con in Charlotte.
“The first issue of Galaxy Man, we were really kind of feeling our way,” he said. “By the fourth, we’ve refined the work flow and quality. It’s a learning and growing experience.” The creative team is currently ramping up Galaxy Man #5 and 6, and a graphic novel is also in the works.
