DOOM PATROL #3 begins a fresh story line for John Byrne's revival of the venerable adventurers of the weird. DP's veteran line up of Robotman, Negative Man, and Elasti-Girl head to Antarctica to investigate a monster invasion from the deep, and the team also gets new uniforms.

As a comic book writer, Byrne sticks to traditional team comics (1960-80's), but, thus far, he's only been able to generate mild heat with Doom Patrol. In this comic, there's nowhere near the dramatic tension or the kind of amazing adventures he spun on his run as Fantastic Four writer/artist two decades ago.

The art is hurried and uninspired, except for a few instances where the old Byrne fire is still there, as in that creepy and eye-popping closing two-page spread. Still, there's reason to think this book will rapidly improve... C
