Mystery, intrigue, and intrigue, John Byrne is often at his best when creating exciting two-part comic book tales. He makes “to be continued” a captivating invitation. DOOM PATROL #5 is more evidence that the series will get better; just the robot fight scenes in this issue suggest better times ahead.
Although it slowly improves, Doom Patrol still seems like an extraneous title. In a tight market, a comic book needs fire, needs something to grab readers’ attentions. Too often Doom Patrol reads like the work of a master craftsman doing paint-by-numbers. I hope the glimmer I see in this issue is indeed a glimmer. B-
