Leading manga and game publisher Square Enix Co. said it will launch an online digital manga store aimed at readers in North America and France in the fall.
The store will offer translated versions of manga titles that can be read on a computer.
Square Enix has already released electronic manga titles for the Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PSP game console. This will be Square Enix's first move to distribute digital manga directly through its own system. It will also be the first Japanese publisher to sell manga titles for viewing on computer directly to overseas customers.
The company's move to expand manga sales globally will attract attention as electronic book publishing and distribution efforts expand.
Details such as the service launch date, number of titles and pricing will be announced later.
The new operation will be offered as a fee-based service at the Square Enix Members site operated by the publisher. It will utilize the company's content distribution technology, payment system and online communities cultivated through its gaming business.
Square Enix said it decided to launch the new service to coincide with the growing popularity of e-books. By initiating the commercial online distribution, it aims to meet the varied needs of its readers.
In addition, Square Enix will work with local publishers in partnerships with Square Enix to promote both its digital and print titles. To combat the problem of piracy, Square Enix intends to sell official online versions of the titles.
Square Enix has released translated manga comics in about 20 countries overseas through local publishing licensees, producing a string of successful titles.
"Fullmetal Alchemist," a popular series in Japan by Hiromu Arakawa, has sold more than 10 million copies in translation. Currently, "Soul Eater" and "Black Butler" are among other titles growing in popularity.
Square Enix has chosen to launch the new operation in North America and France, two major overseas markets for translated Japanese manga comics. The move is intended to gain a direct foothold in each market with online distribution.
