In this story, we have one Etrigan who is lying tortured and dismembered in some demonic dungeon. Then we have another Etrigan calling himself the Lord of the Damned who is overseeing the torture and dismemberment. And then we have another Etrigan who is battling Merlin's ghost somewhere in Eastern Europe. Confused? Well, the writers don't bother explaining any of this to us. The old Silver-Age rule of recapping what happened in previous issues is clearly forgotten. And yet the story has a lot of Silver Age touches like the extensive dialogue in the middle of a battle, character designs, costumes and backgrounds that look right out of Kirby's work on THOR and a general tone closer to a Marvel adventure tale rather than a DC horror story. The art is actually quite good but it just doesn't convey the hellishness of Hell. Perhaps Byrne would be much better off working on a more mainstream superhero title. Something with direct ties to the Silver Age. He would probably work wonders on a Ted Kord version of BLUE BEETLE. Unfortunately....
