While the premise of this story is interesting, it’s basically a take on the Arkham Asylum type of story presented in Batman comics all the time. Moreover, this story continues to perpetuate the myth that all mental institutions are filled with crazy maniacs and deadly criminals. Ann Nocenti wrote a Spider-man story years ago where he was incarcerated, but not in an institution that recruited villains as is often the case in a comic book. It would have been fun to see the extent of such a story on Wolverine without he Batman pastiche. Now, does the story work? Well, for what it’s about, it’s very effective and a clear black and white story. We know Wolverine will eventually pull out all of his claws and murder everyone in there. Why even bother?
If it wasn’t for Paquette, this story would not be enjoyable. He makes Wolverine look like a real man, not a perfect Adonis. He looks rough and out of shape. I like that. When you see fear in his face, you can believe it. The inking is solid and adds the right dark mix to the story. It’s too bad the plot is not good enough to benefit from this.
