Last
issue ended with Jagger in a fight to the death to see if she is organized
crime family assassin material. A woman barely out of her teens pitted against
a massive brawler – an only one will walk away. Of course, it’s Jagger
Rose, otherwise this series would be over in a matter of pages. Her commitment
to the family is complete.
But that
commitment falters when her latest target turns out to be someone close to her.
It’s the first indication of distrust between her and her employers. No doubt
this will lead to a major rift, with Jagger Rose caught between the forces of
the law and her Mafioso masters.
A crime
series in comic books is a hard sell these days, even if it is written by
someone of Bendis’ calber. So it’s a refreshing idea when racks are full of
mutants, long-lived characters, and the latest movie franchise tie-in. Comic
book publishers should continue to be open to a variety of genres.
My
appreciation for this series is based entirely on the script alone. I must
admit I don’t particularly care for Oeming’s artwork. I’m hard pressed to
suggest a story or title for which I think it’s appropriate. I can’t help but
imagine how the series would look in the hands of a different artist.
