The Freedom Fighters journey into outer space to stop alien insects from colonizing the Earth-- a job that is tailor made for the new Red Bee! Actually, the confrontation between the Fighters and the bad guys is resolved pretty quickly-- and pretty cleverly too. The rest of the story sets the stage for the structure of the new Freedom Fighters: a public team that reports to the president but also a secret team that may not follow orders. The tensions within the team, as well as the changes within individual members also get a lot of panel time. While this is intriguing, it also seems too much like the overcomplicated cloak-and-dagger stuff that has been going on in CHECKMATE and various Marvel titles in recent months. You would think a book with the title UNCLE SAM and the FREEDOM FIGHTERS would have some patriotic overtones but DC is probably too cynical for that. The art starts off looking properly spooky as the team battles in the bowels of the beehive. But when this type of look extends to the rest of the book, then it becomes inappropriate. Still, this miniseries shows more promise than the first one which took months just to get the team together. Three and a half stars out of five.
