A new creative team is working on Thor and their task is to make the character popular enough and continue the high sales this series has delivered so the character stays top of mind until his move is released. Here, they go back to the basic and tell the story of the nine legendary worlds of Asgard and how the void created by having Asgard on Midgard creates a vacuum that will attract more troubles for Thor and the Asgardians. But is this new team on Thor worth following?

The first thing I have to say about this series, is that it looks good. It feels like reading a fantasy illustrated book. Even the bad guys introduced this issue, while being all techy and nasty look great. Ferry is a great choice for this book and gives Thor a strong look. I like the little touches he adds like Thor removing his helmet when inside the walls of Asgard.

Fraction for me has been a hit or miss. I don’t like his work on Uncanny X-Men and his Invincible Iron Man the last year has been too slow and not to the same level as the first year. Here he sets up a bunch of plot points and even makes some of it funny. So it’s hard to say whether he’s on to something good with Thor. It wasn’t a runaway hit with me nor a failure. It’s middle ground stuff, but I’m not sure if Fraction can afford middle ground stories anymore. Marvel Comics has faith in him, but many readers don’t. The series he works on, just like Thor sell on their own out of momentum. Will he try to make Thor sell more by putting in quality work or is he just going to mail in a plot every month the way he’s been doing with Uncanny X-Men? I don’t trust him just yet. He can be a great writer but he often is lazy and slow to finish a story, like in his current Invincible Iron Man run. Here, he probably relied too much on Ferry’s work to carry the comic book and that has been his problem several times when working with great artists like Salvaor Larocca or those that appear to be great on the surface but are not, like Greg Land. I’ll definitely come back next issue but he’s on my watch list. I’m not sold just yet.
