This time the odds against the time-lost soldiers get even worse as their unseen enemy starts using mutant ants against them-- ugly monsters that seem to combine the worst of movie zombies and Aliens. The writer again doesn't bother to fill in any of the backstory as to who these characters are and why they are on this mysterious island. So if you missed the previous issues-- too bad for you. Fortunately, the big secret and the plot are explained rather broadly so anyone familiar with comic book conventions will be able to figure things out.

Although there are some clever plot twists and some exciting scenes, many of the main characters seem strangely listless and subdued. You would think a cast that includes such old DC characters like Tomahawk, Firehair, Enemy Ace, Viking Prince and others, would be filled with action and spirited interaction but many characters are just reduced to standing around as part of the background. Oddly, when one character begins talking about timestreams and free radicals, all the characters know what she is talking about even if some of them are little more than cavemen.

The art is also a bit stiff and actually looks rather rushed. Many of the characters look drab despite their exotic origins. At least the art team makes the vast cast recognizable. It just fails to make them very memorable.

This book clearly aspires to be like those complicated 'ensemble' TV series like "Lost" or "Heroes" but the monthly comic format isn't ideal for this. This is an interesting effort from DC Comics but it just seems out of place.
