Mostly, this issue is a lull in the primary action, as the regular Scooby team, accompanied by Daisy (Velma’s sister-in-law) and Cliffy, an orphan boy, wander into the small town of Halcyon. It’s somehow been preserved from the virus that has swept the world, turning most people into mindless creatures. Most would expect it to be a form of haven from the nightmare going on in the world outside, but one can’t shake the feeling the town harbors a more sinister secret.
Art-wise, there are couple of panels I found refreshingly effective, at how the artist conveyed Daphne and Daisy hiding in the trees. It reminded me of the sort of thing Russ Manning might have done back when he was drawing Tarzan
Meanwhile, the back-up feature of Secret Squirrel continues, as we meet the villain of the story, an enemy assassin who calls himself the Wily Wolf. I never watched Secret Squirrel, so I am uncertain if he is an old foe re-imagined, or a new invention for this feature. Either way, Secret Squirrel may have met his match.
As I said before, I can only wonder at how long DC can maintain the apocalyptic storyline before it readers leave in boredom or frustration, and the book collapses from its own aimlessness. The monsters unleashed may have to take a back seat to other adventures, but that seems to be the plan for upcoming issues.
