Mystery Inc. appears to be the preeminent spook busting team in the DC Universe, as they are called upon by the Atom – at Hawkman’s recommendation – to investigate a ghostly face he’s discovered at the atomic scale. With the help of his shrinking belt, he takes the Scooby gang deep into the sub-atomic worlds that comprise the atoms of our existence. In this miniscule universe, they discover a world ruled by a despotic sorcerer, whom the Scooby’s believe to be far less than he claims. Naturally they expose him for the fraud that he is, while the sword of the Atom helps free the people from their enslavement. Not exactly a stellar entry in the Scooby team-up stories, but pairing them with the Atom is not necessarily and easy fit. Nevertheless, one of the things I like about the series is its throwbacks to historical moments, such as the aforementioned Sword of the Atom series of the 1980s. It feeds this old fan’s soul to know that the pre-Crisis DCU is not forgotten. Dario Brizuela’s artwork is more agreeable here than that of the regular ongoing Scooby-Doo, Where are You? Series.
