When an unassuming blogger finds himself attracted to a girl during a part time job, he is surprised to find that she is actually an otaku, or diehard anime fan. What’s worse is that she has an unnatural affinity toward yaoi which is male-on-male romance and from there, the hilarity ensues.

Originally written as a blog by Pentabu, My Girlfriend’s a Geek garnered success in Japan with a pair of light novels, a manga series, and a live action film to boot. The story is an endearing one as chances are, many who have pursued a romance with someone only to discover something shocking about their spouse later will be able to sympathize with the author, whose downtrodden record of events will have readers laughing and feeling for him at the same time.

The style of writing is similar to that of a blog, naturally given its source. It’s an easy read and comes in at just under two hundred pages though breezing through the book will only take a couple hours of time. There’s not a whole lot of depth to the writing nor does there have to be. The entertainment doesn’t come from the writer’s style nor does it stem from the story because quite frankly, there isn’t much of one to begin with. It’s the writer’s reactions that will have reader’s busting a gut or cracking an appreciative smile as he details his many his many tribulations he must go through as he is subjected to new levels of geekiness.

Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks to the book. The page count is short and many of the pages aren’t even filled, relying on over sized text to take up sometimes even three lines worth of material. Another drawback comes in the form of the book’s unpredictability which will hamper it from being re-read. A majority of the satisfaction that comes from flipping through the novel is the writer’s spontaneous reactions to the many situations he is thrust into which can lose some of their humor the second time around.

As the author puts it so brilliantly, “This blog is a record of battle as dictated by a man with a geek for a girlfriend”, the primary focus of the book is to log the events leading up to his finally coming to terms with bizarre habits. For many who have either dated someone who didn’t quite understand their interests or the other way around, My Girlfriend’s a Geek is a heartwarming read that can be appreciated by everyone.
