Another excellent chapter of the Witching Hour crossover storyline appears in the latest issue of Justice League Dark. The last chapter, which appeared in last week’s Wonder Woman, went into the history of Circe and her connection to Hecate. This issue is more action based, and brings in some more characters, on both sides.

Deadman joins the heroes battling Hecate once she sets her sights on Nanda Parbat. And Black Orchid shows up to make trouble for Swamp Thing, as she is one of those witchmarked into being Hecate’s pawns.

But for me, at least, the scene stealer was Detective Chimp. He is still in possession of Jim Rook’s sword, so according to this story, that makes Detective Chimp the new Nightmaster.

That’s a really fun moment, and about the only thing that enlivens this issue. Otherwise, it’s dark and intense, as it should be. Tynion knew exactly the degree of humour to add to make it work, without losing any of the dramatic build.

This is a middle chapter, continuing in the next issue of Wonder Woman, so the only true flaws to the story are the inevitable ones that come with that sort of position. We neither begin nor end the tale, and the scenes themselves are usually not resolved, continuing into the next chapter.

And it occurs to me that the above paragraph is probably the only negative thing I have written about this book. Good. This series is too much fun to say anything truly bad about it.

A great build up for the Witching Hour, expanding the cast, increasing the stakes in the situation, and leading strongly into the next chapter.
