Well gee, this is one heck of an annual.
The Justice League, Titans, Green Lantern Corps, the New Gods, and even some other guest stars all work together to deal with the cracking Source Wall in this issue. And as if cosmic destruction were not enough, the Legion of Doom get involved as well.
The annual does a superb job of tying together the plot threads from the last year of Justice League, recapping some of the important elements of the No Justice series that launched the newest incarnation of the team, and advancing the larger story.
This requires not only skillful storytelling and engaging art, but also an overall plan. So often it’s that last factor that trips comic book storylines up. Editorial changes, or not giving enough space to deal with all the needed elements, will cause large story arcs to crumble along the way.
I am so thrilled that Snyder and Tynion IV just keep exceeding expectations, issue after issue.
They also seem determined to make sure that it is the “lesser” members of the League who get a lot of great moments. Hawkgirl has been in the focus of the last few issues of the League, and once again gets a central position in this story. And Starman just keeps stealing the show whenever he turns up.
While some elements of the plot do get resolved, this is more of a midway point. Or a turning point. The story is clearly nowhere near over, but after this annual, a new direction has emerged, and the situation has changed for good.
You really couldn’t want anything more.
