But one day, one of the child she sponsors reveals to her that she fell through the cracks and that her mother disappeared. Mari McCabe decides to draw on her magical totem to hunt the man who kidnapped the girl’s mother but this is her first outing as a super hero. Will she be able to stand her ground? Forget everything that you read in the New 52. This is a new Vixen. I don’t mind the soft reboot at all. Joe Orlando and Jody Houser base Vixen’s origin on the old one from the Bronze Age so that’s a plus. The story was overtly simple but a good introduction to a neophyte heroine with a conscience. Don’t expect Vixen to channel African emotions and values in this comic. That part of her identity is not very strong. I enjoyed Jamal Campbell’s Vixen. She is black. Unlike the X-Men’s Storm who seem to become paler by the day, having gained blue eyes a while back, Vixen cannot be mistaken for a white woman with slightly darker skin. She is totally black and beautiful!
