Once
again, the cover is misleading. The past few issues, it’s as if the title is
featuring the cover for the next chapter. This one shows the Green Lanterns
“under attack by the Controlled!” Huh-wha? That’s not what happens in this
issue at all.
What does
happen is our four Lanterns of Space Sector 2814 go on the offense, in an
effort to rescue the Guardians from their one-time brethren, the Controllers –
offense being the key word. The focus is on the way the four Lanterns – Hal,
John, Guy and Kyle – fit together as a team, each bringing his own strength in
support of another’s shortcomings.
If you’re
looking for profound character studies or philosophical observations on courage
and commitment, look elsewhere. This issue is all action and ass-kicking (which
can be refreshing, every so often).
Artwork by
Derenick and Herbert is polished and professional, but in a color-centric title
like a Green Lantern book, it’s colorist Jason Wright who makes it work. The
energy constructs of the individual Lanterns take on the energetic glow, rather
than simply the green beams of light I grew up with.
