Xudar
– a world much like our own, whose inhabitants aren’t much different from us.
Sure, they have orange skin and bird-like beaks, but they love and fear and
hope just as humans do. This is a tale of a Green Lantern yet to be, set in the
future but told in the past tense.
Somar was a
child when Starro invaded her world (see previous issues of Hal Jordan), but in
the aftermath of the experience, despite the tremendous loss she suffered, she
learned what fear was, and how to master it. By overcoming great fear, she set
foot on a path that would someday lead her to wielding a ring alongside other
great members of the Green Lantern Corps.
This is a
typical done-in-one, offering readers a respite between all the intergalactic
battles, world-saving and other crises in recent issues. Hal Jordan has been
reunited with the Corps, but we’ll have to wait until next issue before we
truly see “Hal Jordan AND the Green Lantern Corps.”
This issue
features the artwork of V. Ken Marion, whom I have not seen on the title until
now. His pencils are inked by Paul Neary and Dexter Vines, whose work blend
seamlessly. I am completely unable to determine where one inker has left off
and another has begun. Kudos to them for not letting me see the wires.
There are
teasers to this issue, suggesting the return of an assortment of old foes,
possibly a new leader of the Sinestro Corps, and an entire corps of Power Ring
wielders from Earth 3. Definitely a title to keep an eye on.
