Green Lanterns Simon and Jessica are playing in the big league now – the Justice League. While they’ve both been involved in JLA adventures, they’ve now been recruited by Batman to help out with a case in Gotham. It’s a unique puzzle, as people from any given walk of life are suddenly gripped with an overwhelming fear of Batman.

The Lanterns are on the case, but Simon believes he has it solved already. The obvious culprit is the Scarecrow, whose M.O.is fear. But Batman isn’t inclined to see it so easy. Further friction comes about when the Dark Knight realizes Simon also carries a gun. We know Bats’ feeling about firearms, but he is concerned that Simon would even bother, when he has a Green Lantern ring.

I enjoyed the set-up, bringing to mind the old Brave & the Bold series of the 1970s. It featured Batman teaming up with other DC characters, though sometimes those stories seemed a bit forced, and often borderline ludicrous. But that was the era, and the readers have demanded better. In this instance, DC seems inclined to give it to them.

My only concern is that it’s a marketing ploy. It wouldn’t be the first time a publisher guest-starred one of its most popular characters in another title just to goose sales a little bit. But being privy to other story elements, I’m optimistic it’s a well-intended story, being told for entertainment rather than sales figures.
