This first issue of Gotham City Sirens #1 reunites three Batman villainess that have worked together several times in the past in the DC Comics’ continuity and in the Batman animated cartoon series from the 1990s to the 2000s’ continuity. Catwoman after having her heart ripped out by Hush several months ago is back in the adventuring game. Her heart has been healed magically but when facing a third rate villain, she is clearly outperformed. It’s up to Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn to lend her a hand and make sure she is healed physically and psychologically. But first, Quinn and Ivy want Catwoman to reveal to them who Batman is.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this comic book as much as I did. It was a simple read, but the characters’ personalities were just right. Harley Quinn continued to be a nut job and Poison Ivy was as usual the cold calculating mind of the outfit. As for Catwoman, she seems to have lost her edge for good.  Paul Dini loves these characters and it shows. That’s why he even put Zatanna in the mix. I hope we’ll see more of Zatanna in this series too. This is a satisfying read, but with the number of comic books coming out and their increased price, a series like this one has to fight to keep a readership. I wish them the best of luck because the series is that good.

Of course, any comic book featuring female lead is forever doomed to have an artist that knows how to highlight the female physique – or draw something that looks like what men idealize about women’s bodies. March does a good job drawing women, but also backgrounds and male characters. His work is crispy and full of action. He’s capable of doing comedic facial expression and is a good storyteller. Did I mention that his women, although over sexualized, have reasonably real proportions?
