The Dr. Mid-Nite action figure was one of the early DCDirect in the second JSA wave way back in 2001. Unlike many DC Direct toys of that time, he has knee articulations which increases his mobility. He also had that experimental ballpoint joint that DCDirect had used on a few characters like the Silver Age Aquaman and Aqualad. In the case of Dr. Mid-Nite, the ballpoint joint was very flexible.

Oddly, Dr. Mid-Nite has long skinny legs which affected his stability, although with more possibility for poses, it is something that can be fixed. His cape is hard plastic, not rubber. It adds weight to the character and is not removable, unless you remove Dr. Mid-Nite’s head first. The Doctor comes with two exchangeable right forearms. One of them carries Hooty, his sidekick owl. The other one is a traditional fist. Both forearms/wrists rotate.

The colours on this action figure are accurate, but also portray the gaudiness of the colour-blind doctor. The dark purple gloves are hideous but accurate to the early appearances of the character. The face is scultpted by Tim Bruckner, giving it a classic look although not as distinctive and memorable as DR. Fate or Jay Garrick the Golden Age Flash.

DCDirect made an action figure of the newer Dr. Mid-Nite since but none of the original character Dr. McNider. It’s a good toy but of course possibly very difficult to find, given the low production run on early DCDirect action figures and the years this toy has been out.
