I really enjoyed and admired Cecil Castelluci’s work on Shade, the Changing Girl, and Shade, the Changing Woman, so I approached the Female Furies miniseries with very high expectations.

To my surprise, those expectations were exceeded. Soooooo exceeded that I barely even remember what I was expecting.

This miniseries achieves a remarkable task, taking Granny Goodness and the Female Furies and making the reader root for them. This doesn’t involve pitting them against some big new villain who is out to destroy Apokolips or anything. Rather, this delves into the past, and shows us the battle that Granny and her Furies faced, trying to get Darkseid and his all-male court to take them seriously.

On top of that, this is absolutely hilarious. I howled out loud with laughter more than once while reading it. It’s amazing how Castelluci manages to find humour in the degradation the Furies feel while being judged by Darkseid, DeSaad, Steppenwolf, and Glorious Godfrey. The women want to show off their fighting prowess, but instead they are forced to compete in cooking and bathing suit competitions.

Adriana Melo does a really great job with the art. Without going overboard, she somehow manages to make the Female Furies look more, I don’t know, wholesome than the male Apokoliptians. Wholesome might not be the right word, but visually it is easy to tell who we are meant to side with.

I also really love the way Auralie is used. Auralie is a fairly obscure New Gods character, a footnote in the origin of Mister Miracle. Here we learn much more about her, and her relationship with Big Barda.

Had this only been a one shot I would have been content with it. As a six issue miniseries, I am bursting at the seams for the next issue to come out.
