The hostage crisis at Plano High School has escalated, as three mundanes with bad Bieber cuts have used magical artifacts to take over the school – artifacts that should have been delivered to Acquisitions for safe keeping. But Inola Tanner, an agent for Acquisitions, opted to keep them for herself. Any responsible gun owner will tell you: Never leave a weapon where a kid can get to it.


The players have call in Robert Speckland, who is something of a Potter-level prodigy when it comes to this world’s magic. He’s gone inside the barrier around the school for negotiation, but when a cop attempts to follow him inside, LITERALLY all hell breaks loose.


The scope of the magic involved here is more than just levitating and throwing energy bolts. It has evolved into a more 3-dimensional strategy between the Fables and the magically-enhanced Mundanes. Unfortunately, the Mundanes seem to be winning.


Having the opportunity to read several chapters at one sitting has given me new appreciation for the series. Allow that to be a wake-up call for the comics industry in general, that more compressed storytelling has greater appeal than extended narratives to eventually be re-packaged into a trade paperback. Here’s a thought: release the trade first, then divvy it into chapters for those who’d rather pay a few dollars a month than $20-30 all at once.
