Dark Horse Panel at the San Diego Comic Con

The big news at today’s San Diego Comic-Con Dark Horse panel was the return of
Dark Horse Presents, the anthology that was once the company’s flagship title. Cancelled in 2000, the series launched
Concrete,
Sin City, and
Hellboy, among others, and, as Dark Horse’s first publication, was the catalyst that led to the company’s success. But what’s more interesting than the series’ return is the fact that the comic will be entirely digital. Dark Horse has partnered with myspace, and is presenting the comic exclusively on the social networking site, presumably on the assumption that emo kids need something to read while they hope that they get in Atreyu’s top eight. Speaking of emo, one of the stories,
The Umbrella Academy, is written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, which should definitely bring a heavy myspace crowd over, as well as a strong Facebook contingent.
But for comic fans, the big news in the first online issue is a new Joss Whedon story, entitled
Sugarshock. The other two stories rounding out the new
Dark Horse Presents #1 are
Samurai: Heaven and Earth by Ron Marz and Luke Ross, and
The Comic Con Murder Case, by Rick Geary. Art on
Sugarshock is provided by Fabio Moon, and Gabriel Ba does the same for
The Umbrella Academy.
