Victoria Hand announces the surrender of the United States to the Molecule Man, trying to win some time while she retrieves Norman Osborn, her boss and figure out what to do next to stop the villain. But will Ms. Hand’s plan be enough to delay the eventual full attack of the Molecule Man, or is there something much more sinister in the way the Sentry has returned and now understands how the powers of the Molecule Man work?
The real cliffhanger here is not the Molecule Man but the Sentry and his new understanding of his powers. The Dark Avengers really are becoming more interesting. There was a risk that the Dark Reign story had dragged too long but this issue pieces the parts that will finally end Dark Reign and move into new territory. I like Victoria Hand’s attitude and strength of character here. She’s not a villain but a dedicated person surrounded by crazy lunatics, including her boss. Yet, she has the guts to tell him to seek psychological help. I can’t wait to see what the next issue brings.
Deodato has often been for me a hit or miss, but here, it’s a hit. He’s much more interesting than in the first issues. Gone are the dramatic pauses, replaced by solid storytelling and good staging. My only question is why can’t he draw nipples on naked characters. I thought this “convention” of the comic book world had been dismissed years ago. As an aside, old time readers will recognize that this cover is an old recreation of the first Avengers’ series #314 which also mentioned the Void!
