Frank moves into town with his family and is quickly approached by the neo-Nazi kids in town. It turns out he’s not a great fit, having been expelled from his former high school for hurting other neo-Nazi kids. As he makes his way in this new town with new friends, a creature prowls and attacks people from all sides of the political spectrum.

This is a new Vertigo series with promise that takes from current cultural wars and attacks on the Latino community in the United States to create a tale about those living near the hypothetical wall that some want built to stop migrant workers in town. There are a lot of important revelations in this first issue and more than enough space to explore the main characters and his supporting cast. This is amazing. The threat is exposed but for now, it was not the most important aspect of the story. That will probably come for the next issue.

Ramon Villalobos reminds me of Geoff Darrow but with some edge. His lines are textured and wavering with extra grit. His proportions can be similar to Robert Crumb’s but with less exaggerations. It’s the right style for a story featuring monsters in the desert.
