Bombshells United implies a number of
Bombshells teamed together. Previous issues have featured Wonder Woman and her
Wonder Girls, so it failed to impress me much. But future issues promise much
more, as this one implies a greater gathering of super-heroines.
This issue
serves as in introduction – a prologue – to the next story arc, as Star
Sapphire comes to town. No doubt a great many Bombshells will be called upon in
this crisis. Included in the line-up are Bombshell versions of Batgirl, Black
Canary, the Suicide Squad, Bumblebee, Katana, Dawnstar, Lois Lane Supergirl, Aquawoman,
Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Vixen, Hawkgirl, Star Sapphire, Jessica Cruz, the
Flash, Starfire, Platinum, and the Black Bat. But to say they were entirely
active would be misleading.
One thing
this issue features – and previous issues have also, if I recall correctly – is
song lyrics as a narrative tool. I’ve seen that in other comics and novels, and
I have yet to see it used effectively, simply because the nature of the medium
is inherently silent. One reads a comic, and without audible music to accompany
the lyrics, they lose the reader, and thereby their impact.
The artwork
by Jarrell and Fitzpatrick is more satisfying than that of previous issues, in
my opinion. There’s a simplicity to it, reminiscent of Mike Allred, that works
very well. It seems better defined and perhaps less “sketchy” than
illustrations from previous issues.
