Huntress
is missing, and Batgirl and Black Canary have barely recovered from last
issue’s battle with Burnrate, the Calculator’s robotic A.I. Even with such
allies as Green Arrow, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, the Birds may be in over their
heads, as Calculator will spare nothing in learning who Oracle is.
It
all boils down to a final fatal confrontation, with Huntress, Batgirl and Black
Canary on one side, and Calculator, Blackbird, and Maria Bertinelli (Huntress’s
mom) on the other. I’m not saying someone will die, but given this is the last
issue (for now), it also marks a new beginning for those involved.
I’m
digging Roge Antonio’s artwork, and I’m confident DC will have another project
lined up for him very soon. They could do a lot worse than to put him on Batgirl or one of the other bat-titles.
He has an economy of line that I greatly appreciate, with enough texture but
not so much that his renderings look cluttered.
I’ve
enjoyed this series very much, and am sorry to see it go. I wish I’d discovered
it sooner. But that’s not to say the Birds of Prey will be out of action for
long. They could always pop up again in any given title of the DCU, until they
find their way forward once again. I look forward to that. In the meantime, perhaps
Julie Benson and Shawna Benson can find their place on Bombshells.
