Spotlight Binnies 2012 Best New Series By Zak Edwards January 3, 2013 - 20:43 Best New Series: Saga Easily the biggest announcement at Comic-Con 2011 was Brian K. Vaughan’s return to comics, and what a glorious return this has been.  The Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina scribe, after trying to fix TV’s Lost, has returned with the best series of the year: Saga.  Telling a Romeo & Juliet style space epic, Vaughan’s witty dialogue, sans his usual pop culture savvy references, and humour has only gotten better.  The story is nuanced, entertaining, and equal parts fantastical and bitingly accurate about the world around us.  And, teaming up with yet another gifted Canadian artist, Saga is gorgeous to look at as well.  Artist Fiona Staples’ ability to blend styles, emotion, and anything popping out of Vaughan’s mind seamlessly together makes the book almost better to look at than read, except that it’s also the best read on the shelves. Runner-Up: Hawkeye Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye has managed to make monthlies fun without earth-shattering events or drastic re-branding (but they do have a sharp stylistic sense). Instead, they've taken an often over-looked character and made him feel like the glue of the Marvel Universe.  In Hawkeye, Clint Barton isn't the most important hero in the room, but he's the most interesting. With his love of the color purple, his instant regret, and his inability keep up with his super-powered friends, Hawkeye is everything you used to love about comics.
