More Comics Becky Cloonan's The Mire Review By Andy Frisk August 30, 2012 - 01:02 Writer(s): Becky Cloonan Penciller(s): Becky Cloonan Inker(s): Becky Cloonan $5.00 US A sequel of sorts to her first medieval dark fantasy/paranormal jaunt Wolves, The Mire tells the story of Sir Owain and his squire Aiden. Aiden is sent on a mission through the Withering Swamp to deliver a letter to a decrepit castle the day before and important battle, only to discover that the rumors that the Swamp is haunted are true...in more ways than one. Sharp, short, and beautiful, The Mire is another excellent example of why Cloonan is one of the best sequential artists in the business. Her work here, which brings to life a medieval setting that appears Celtic or Norse in nature and culture, is absolutely beautiful. Her recreation of the medieval encampment the day before a violent battle, not unlike one that I imagine would display all the barbarity of one of the battles as shown in the film Braveheart, is flawless and astounding in its detail. Each of the character's dress and the surrounding environment which Aiden moves through, which includes the haunted swamp and the decrepit castle, are also gloriously detailed and beautiful. The ghostly happenings that highlight the story are also sublimely frightening and glorious in their presentation and detail. Becky Cloonan has been drawing and writing some of the best looking comics in the business for quite a while now and her artwork gets better and better with each project she undertakes, and that's saying a great deal about her skill since her work has been brilliant from the get go. I always look forward to anything that Cloonan is drawing, especially her self-published works such as The Mire.
