Confession time; I’m not familiar with Battle Angel Alita. I know the basics of the title and that James Cameron has been looking to adapt it into a film for years, but that’s as far as my knowledge stretches on the subject. So when Volume 14 arrived on my doorstep, I was a bit hesitant to delve in. Turns out I was right to be apprehensive. I had a difficult time sorting through everything.

Volume 14 picks up during the later stages of what is known as the Z.O.T. Tournament. Several worlds are on the line as teams consisting of all sorts of alien life group together to compete. With the stakes this high, the results are sure to carry far reaching consequences.

Sadly, I found it difficult to invest myself in the volume. Without a proper introduction or history, I just didn’t have any connection to the characters. I could appreciate the gravity of the scenarios laid out, but aside from Alita, I had no idea who any of the characters were.

While I struggled through the story, I found the art to be easy to swallow. Yukito Kishiro’s art is exquisite. His pencils are among the best in the industry and his line work is top notch.

This was honestly one of the toughest titles to review. I couldn’t find anything wrong with the series but the volume failed to leave an impact on me due to my unfamiliarity with the characters and their world. Still, for what was here, I enjoyed, and if nothing else, the volume piqued my interest in going back and acquainting myself with the series.
